What's the bloody point of it all?

So I've been thinking .... and doesn't every great whatever this is begin with that line...

So I've been thinking, although I am typing this completely spontaneously right now, whether pretty much  anything is worth while, like at all. Ever. No this isn't going to get particularly deep, but I'd appreciate you stick with me here.

Having been revising for my religious studies exam for Monday for the last hour or so there was something that stood out for me in my notes that I thought I might share:

"The fact that we are even in existence is a sign of God's goodness" (as an argument for the Christian God being a loving God)

I'm an atheist and as part of the course we HAVE to provide arguments both for and against whatever the question of discussion is, as well as phrase it as if we believed in it. No this is not going to be a rant about religion; I respect all religions and whatever you chose to believe is awesome, seriously just do what you want, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody, that's cool.

But what bothered me about this argument is that it just doesn't make any sense, to me at least. It states that merely because we exist God must love us, yet if we didn't exist we wouldn't know; we wouldn't have any consciousness therefore would have no opinion towards being either a live or dead.

So I began to think some more about this. If we didn't exist, we would not be conscious to suffer, we would not feel pain or guilt or sadness or longing or ...love? We wouldn't feel happy or excited or creative because there would be no us, no living consciousness to feel any of those things.

However that also means there would be no consciousness to be sad about not having those things either. There would be nothing, no feeling at all. No feeling to feel bothered that we didn't have feeling.

So what is the point of it all? If we are alive to suffer.

Its goes back to the discussion regarding free will. If we had no free will, we would be nothing. If we could do no wrong, and had no intention to do wrong, there would be no point in us living as we would be merely robots who eat, sleep, live and then die achieving nothing because we are content with what we have already. There would be no suffering, but that means there would be no feeling of appreciation towards acts of kindness. Ergo a free world such as ours will always have suffering.

So here we are, we didn't chose to live, our parents (may..) have chosen to have us, but it was entirely random that the person created was you and I. It could have been someone taller, more athletic, better at maths, less good at art or more creatively talented; but it just happen to be someone like you.

And what do we do now? We're here on this world whether you like it or not. And look around you. Others in the exact same position, they all look like they know what they're doing, where there going, and how, at least sometimes anyways. But we are all the same, all equal as animate pieces of intelligent living organism. We are not born equal socially, but equal biologically as human beings who just happen to be on the same planet at the same time. Our paths just happen to cross one another's.

So we make the most of it by not bettering ourselves, but others? I believe in random acts of kindness, in hope that one day I might be the subject of one myself. In the hope that the more people who do the same, happier other peoples' lives become. As I see my life with no definite point or purpose, I am a mere speck on the timeline of human history, I see also no point in selfishness considering that will make me even smaller on the human timeline than I already am. When you are dead and gone, you might find that the lasting affects you will have will be on people, in turn if they take inspiration from your kindness and pass it on like ripples spreading outwards on still water. That was you, that was your impact on the world

This is why I idolise the idea of a utopian society such as in the G4 My Little Pony universe, because if we live to better the lives of others, we in turn have our lives be bettered. I'm not saying be a push over, strive to achieve what ever that will make you content with your life.

However the general conclusion that I think I've come to is that we while we happened to be here for no apparent reason,  we might as well be pleasant in whatever shape or form that is. Even if it's just little things. Even though that your time on this earth may be merely a small chink in human history, and there may be no definite point definite point to your existence; none it matters. You're here on this Earth, so make the most of what you will.

~Peace

(this wasn't very structured/ focussed, just a little bit of verbal pondering in order to procrastinate doing my RS revision)
